The Steeldogs may be gone, but will never be forgotten. Enjoy these parting fun facts to bring a smile to your face in those times you would rather be at Steeldogs game…

  • The Steeldogs remain the longest tenured professional sports team to ever play in Birmingham, Alabama, spanning the duration of 8 full seasons.
  • Steeldogs games were attended over 400,000 times by members all across the community, with a cumulative home game attendance of 425,085, to be exact.
  • Over the course of franchise history, the Steeldogs played 134 contests, including the playoffs.
  • The Steeldogs qualified for the postseason in 4 out of 8 seasons, not half bad.
  • The best ever Steeldogs season came in 2001, their second year in existence, running their regular season record to an impressive 12-4.
  • The Steeldogs won a grand total of 63 regular season games, not to mention 2 playoff victories.
  • No one spent more time in a Steeldogs uniform than two-way lineman David Daniel, a member of the team for the final 6 seasons. (more…)

Early Retirement

As a defunct franchise, the Steeldogs can’t retire any numbers into a ring of fame, but we’ll do one better retire all the numbers. After all, no one will ever have the privilege of wearing numbers ‘s 1 through 99 for the Steeldogs ever again. This snapshot is a picture of the Steeldogs’ final roster, frozen in time, at least until one day, a team bearing the same name, clad in orange, black and silver, finally makes its prodigal return to the city of Birmingham. Remembering the Steeldog Greats

College football may always be king in the state of Alabama, but for eight fine years arena football enjoyed its own place in the local spotlight, with a few former Steeldogs showing their talents not only on the 50-yard field but a bigger stage in the NFL, both figuratively and in the 100-yard sense. Here’s a look back at the Alabama Steeldog all-time greats and where their careers took them, beyond Birmingham.Erick Harris – Harris came to Steeldogs from fellow Arena Football 2 team, the Amarillo Dusters, serving as perhaps the team’s most versatile player, with the ability to play start at both wide receiver and defensive back. Showing obvious talent, Harris made the jump straight from the Steeldogs to the Philadelphia Eagles where he served on the team’s practice squad. The Kansas City Chiefs would give the young DB a look a year later, choosing to keep him around on the practice unit as well. In search of more playing time, Harris took his talents across the pond to NFL Europe where he played for the Rhein Fire and Amsterdam Admirals. Eventually, Harris found his way back to Arena circuit, spending time with the Grand Rapids Rampage before his current team, the Cleveland Gladiators.Detronn Harris The prolific wide receiver out of West Georgia actually traversed the football landscape in reverse order, starting his pro playing days with brief stints as a member of the Titans and Panthers before flourishing in the Arena Football 2 level in Birmingham.
